True to his roots, Aakash Odedra is a key figure of the effervescent Indian dance scene on the international circuit. His choreographies range from large-scale classical evenings, to contemporary dance, to opera and dance-theatre.
Choreographed by contemporary Kathak icon Aditi Mangaldas, Echoes is a stunning approach to the traditional art form of Kathak. In this piece, both choreographer and performer tell us about the strings that connect us to our ancestors. Aakash dances across a stage invaded by cascades of bells as a mesmerizing symbol of this resounding ties, offering us a glance into Kathak’s divinity and mysterious ways.
In I Imagine, Aakash explores the dynamism of dance theatre by embodying three generations of immigrants through masks and acting. The result? A visceral and humorous story of migration and identity. This piece was co-created with spoken-word artist Sabrina Mahfouz whose voice opens the dozens of suitcases piled on stage, thus unveiling endless stories that Aakash’s characters share with us.
The Patrick Studio is easily accessible from our Thorp St entrance or from Level 3 inside the theatre.
