In the latest of our regular staff blogs, we chat to Marketing Officer, Hannah Carroll about her multi-faceted role promoting the wider work of Birmingham Hippodrome, from our thriving Events and Catering arm right through to our vibrant programme of Free Outdoor Event and Festivals.

How long have you worked at the Hippodrome?

I started here last July so have just passed my six month anniversary. Given lots of staff have worked here for decades, I’m definitely still a newbie though!

What made you want to work here?

I’ve been coming to the Hippodrome ever since I was little so I’ve wanted to work here for over 20 years. It’s a very special place in Birmingham – full of laughter, nostalgia and more than a touch of glitz and glamour. The 7 year old ballet dancer in me still can’t quite believe I get to come here every day!

How would you describe your job?

The Hippodrome’s Marketing Team is divided into Productions and Projects and I work on the Projects side of things. We provide marketing support for everything that takes place off the main stage, from the restaurant and conferences to education projects and outdoor festivals for Hippodrome CREATIVE. My job is busy, varied, exciting, and I love it!

How would you describe a typical working day?

It’s a bit of a cliché, but I really don’t think there is a typical day in my job. Every day starts with me writing a long list and prioritising what’s most urgent. The list is often wide-ranging, from briefing in designers to updating the website and sending out emails.

What’s the favourite part of your job?

I like the way my job allows me to work with teams across the organisation, from Ticket Sales and Front of House to IT and Techical. I get a glimpse into all aspects of the business.

What’s your favourite production in general?

Les Misérables holds a special place in my heart. My Nanny Lily, whom I was very close to, passed away last year and this was her favourite show (although she always called it ‘Lar Miserair’ in a distinct Brummie accent). I remember us all coming to see it in the 1990s at the Hippodrome and would love it to come back while I’m working here. I’m also a bit of a Francophile so adore anything set in Paris.

What are you most proud of achieving here?

I would say probably the Hippodrome Ambassadors scheme which I’ve set up from scratch in the past few months. We now have 11 enthusiastic and talented young people helping us to appeal to and engage younger audiences aged 18-30. It’s still a bit of an experiment and a work in progress, but I’m proud of what they’ve achieved so far, including some wonderfully-written and insightful reviews of the panto.

Which show/event are you most looking forward to in the coming season?

I can’t wait for Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes in February. It’s the one show I’ve been waiting for since I started last year. Ballet, fairytales and a vintage aesthetic – so up my street!
