Birmingham Hippodrome brings WW1 to life this autumn

This autumn, Birmingham Hippodrome will mark the centenary of the end of the First World War with commemorations in the theatre, city centre and beyond.  As a part of this season, the theatre will present Homecomings, a performance project at New Street Station on Sunday 11 November. Throughout the day, schools from the Hippodrome’s Education Network (HEN) will present poignant performances responding to war developed over the autumn term. The theatre has been running workshops in 13 local Birmingham schools educating over 500 pupils on the history of WW1, using art to express their findings.

Also at New Street Station on the day will be a Virtual Reality pop-up experience, Empire Soldier. This immersive and emotive Virtual Reality installation explores the stories of forgotten Caribbean and South Asian soldiers. The installation will also be in the theatre’s foyers from 29 October – 2 November.

Building on the WW1 theme, Birmingham Hippodrome is offering a week full of FREE activities for all the family this half-term. During the week there will be War Horse craft workshops, making artwork inspired by the phenomenal show. They have storytelling and drama workshops using WW1 artefacts from the Imperial War Museum. There’s also a Slapstick and Slaughter performance from Desperate Men, where two men attempt to confront the absurdity of war using their bodies and voices in this dark comedy.
