The weather might have taken a turn for the worst but there was no shortage of Cuban heat in Birmingham last week, thanks to international dance icon Carlos Acosta, who joined friends, patrons and dance supporters for a special Afternoon Tea and Talk in support of Hippodrome CREATIVE during a well-earned break between shows on Fri 20 Oct.

Hosted by our Artistic Director and Chief Executive Fiona Allan, the event was attended by over 80 guests who tucked into a delicious Prosecco Afternoon Tea before hearing more about Carlos’ remarkable career as a ballet star, his pioneering work promoting access to dance in his native Cuba and the evolution of his new dance company, Acosta Danza.

The event was a huge success, raising a grand total of £1600 in support of Hippodrome CREATIVE projects in the community.

After taking time to pose for souvenir pictures with guests and sign a few autographs, there was just enough time to unveil Carlos’s very own piece of Hippodrome history; a dedicated seat in our beautiful 1800 seat auditorium.

To celebrate the company’s arrival earlier that same week, we also treated our guests to some traditional Hippodrome hospitality with a celebratory cake and post-show drinks reception. A huge thanks to Cake Moda for yet another fantastic creation. We think Bake Off would be proud!

Based in Havana, Acosta Danza is made up of the best dancers Cuba has to offer who have trained in both ballet and contemporary dance styles. Their latest work, Debut, consisted of new and existing pieces by Cuban choreographers who have rarely been seen outside the country as well as new pieces from international choreographers who take their inspiration from their iconic nation.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Carlos Acosta for all of his support on the week and wish the Acosta Danza company well on the next leg of their first ever UK Tour.

Adiós until next time!
