One of our young ambassadors, Josh, tells us about his experience of coming to the theatre to see La Cage Aux Folles.

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of attending the La Cage Aux Folles press night alongside my fellow Hippodrome Young Ambassadors. Before the show, we were joined by glammed-up drag queens from the nearby Gay Quarter. Striding around gleefully, they interacted with guests, posed for photos and proudly belted out loud renditions of songs we were yet to hear, giving us a preview of what was to come and leaving us wanting more.

When it was finally showtime the first thing that struck me was the minimalist, traditional and unapologetically French set design. The stage was dimly lit with an enigmatic shade of red, building up our anticipation for what was to come. The moment the show got underway the crowd was mesmerised – hundreds of pairs of eyes were glued to the stage as ‘Les Cagelles’ burst into song and dance, ensuring we were prepared for an exciting evening.

The show itself was superb: audacious, hilarious and ingenious. It had it all. The fun and catchy songs never failed to warrant a huge round of applause from the audience, the costumes and set design were stunning and the energy and repartee between the audience and the stars of the show was fantastic.

La Cage Aux Folles is a timeless classic and one that highlights the important messages of acceptance and love.
