Casting a spell in Birmingham

Staged worldwide for nearly 17 years now, Wicked the Musical first opened on Broadway in 2003 before flying across the pond to open in London in 2006. The retelling of the story of the witches of Oz first made its way to Birmingham Hippodrome for a two month run in 2014, returning again for a sold out four week run in 2018.

Peek behind the Emerald Curtain

The West End production has a great selection of behind the scenes videos on their YouTube channel including a series which takes a look at various elements of the spectacular production including scenery, costuming and props.

Broadway’s production also have a terrific insider series titled “Flying Lessons” which tracks the journey of their latest Elphaba from rehearsals, going green and opening night.

Defying Gravity

Back in 2004, original cast members Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth performed one of the productions most famous numbers, Defying Gravity, at the prestigious Tony Awards ceremony in New York. The show was nominated for 10 awards and Idina Menzel went on to win the accolade for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of the misunderstood witch, Elphaba.
