Yesterday we celebrated the launch of our new book, Hippodrome 120 by David Roberts. The hardcover, which features a special foreword by Sir Matthew Bourne, delves into the fascinating history of Birmingham Hippodrome, told in 120 short tales.

The evening was hosted by Birmingham Hippodrome Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Fiona Allan and included a Q&A with the book’s author. Following a celebratory drinks reception, guests were invited to ask David about his personal Hippodrome highlights and the creative process of bringing the book to life.

Hippodrome 120 presents a snapshot of famous memorabilia, stage stars and exciting events that have contributed to the hippodrome’s vast and varied history. From the Royal Variety Show to The Beatles, David scoured the archives, looking at over 6,000 shows in the theatre’s history.

David became a Trustee of the Hippodrome in 2014. As a professor of English at Birmingham City University and a National Teaching Fellow, his studies of theatre and literary history have been widely published. His previous book, George Farquhar: A Migrant Life Reversed was described by The Irish Times in 2018 as ‘wonderfully readable and meticulously researched’.

If you love our theatre, Hippodrome 120 is a must-have coffee table addition. The book is available to purchase at the Birmingham Hippodrome Coffee Bar.
