Earlier this month, Emma, Amy and Hannah from Birmingham Hippodrome’s Marketing & Communications team, went along to see the World Premiere of Akram Khan’s Jungle Book reimagined at Leicester Curve.

Here’s what we thought to the show:

We’ve all come back absolutely glowing with praise about this stunning production: “beautiful” and “mesmerising” are just some of the words we’ve been using to describe it.

For us, the highlight was the character of Baloo, bringing warmth and humour to a relevant and timely tale of climate change. While the message is clear and powerful – we must act now – the show is still heartening. We do have a chance to make a difference.

Voiceovers for each of the animals bring the story to life in a really accessible way. With the animals bickering about what to do with Mowgli, these made us laugh out loud throughout.

The storytelling is engaging and family friendly – you feel instantly drawn into this world. We’re sure that anyone over 10 would enjoy this show and take something from it.

We were blown away by the the innovative use of animations and projections which are cleverly interweaved into the dance narrative and fill out Mowgli’s backstory. They are simply spectacular and used in a way none of us have ever seen before.

As for the dance itself, the choreography is detailed and athletic, with each animal given its own unique form of movement. The wolves slink across the stage while the monkeys jump  excitedly. The dancers are all breath-taking.

All in all, we think this production is truly a must-see!
