This term, almost 700 young people across our Hippodrome Education Network had been working on a creative project based on the much-loved story The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister.

This project sadly had to come to an end earlier than planned, but we wanted to share the fantastic work from the schools and share ways to continue the fun at home.

Our Learning & Participation Officers worked with schools to bring literacy to life by collaborating with children in KS1 to create their very own performance inspired by The Rainbow Fish. The pupils created a short story, dance or song that linked with the themes of the story and were due to perform these pieces at a celebration event at the Hippodrome.

The young people had a sea of creative performance ideas from pirates to aquariums, underwater races to sea dancing, and the creativity didn’t stop with their physical performance ideas. The groups also got to work with fantastic artists to create their very own under the sea puppets fashioned from recycled materials.

We’d like to take this opportunity to also thank all the staff, teachers and young people for their enthusiasm and passion for this fishy educational adventure.

The Rainbow Fish is a great story for all the family, so why not keep the fun going at home by:

• Creating your own Rainbow Fish story
• Using household recycled materials to create your own sea creature puppet
• Drawing an under the sea themed picture
• Writing a song about the Rainbow Fish
• Watching a read along video of The Rainbow Fish

We can’t wait to be back in our HEN schools again and we hope our Rainbow Fish project inspires you to get creative at home.

Make sure to share your under the sea creations with us on Twitter!

“We have loved rehearsing in class and outside of class for their play. The project has given so much help to the children and for us teachers. In addition to this, we enjoyed where the children were able to create their own puppets for their play! Overall – a fab experience!” – K.Kalcutt and M.Dhadley (Year 1 Teachers) Starbank School
