Creating a more accessible theatre experience: our new Audio Description system
Today (Wed 9 July), we are pleased to announce the launch of our improved Audio Described system – Auri, designed to make theatre experiences more accessible for our audiences, especially our Visually Impaired, D/deaf and Neurodivergent customers.
Featuring state-of-the-art hardware by leading manufacturer in assistive listening technology, Ampetronic, the new system includes headphones, pocket-sized receivers, and induction loops. The receivers use cutting-edge Bluetooth technology, Auracast, making them compatible with any Auracast-enabled device such as wireless headphones, earbuds, and hearing aids. The receivers have a 3.5mm jack, enabling audience members to use their own wired headphones, while the induction loops can be used as usual for hearing aids set to the T function.
The improved system provides access to the show relay at every performance, so audience members can hear the show through headphones, neck loop or compatible Bluetooth device. It also provides Audio Description – a live verbal commentary on the visual elements of a production as it unfolds, which can support visually impaired guests – at our Audio Described performances.
This upgrade will enable even more people with access and sensory needs to enjoy live performances on our stages. This work directly supports our Hippodrome Unlocked ambition in our five-year strategic plan, in which we aim to become the most accessible venue of our scale in the UK.
Paul Hopkins, Access and Inclusion Advocate, trialled the new system at the Hippodrome and shares his initial thoughts: “I’m really excited the Hippodrome has committed to considerable investment in their new Audio Description equipment. In the short term: vision impaired audience members like me will experience immediate improvements in being able to sit anywhere with consistent sound quality. Right now, we can use our own wired headphones for maximum familiarity and comfort. Moving forward, we’ll be able to connect the wireless earbuds we use every day with their personalised features and settings to the new system.
“Overall, this exciting development represents one of many access initiatives in the Hippodrome’s ongoing journey to becoming the most accessible venue of its scale in the UK and taken together, has led me to have the confidence to become a regular at Birmingham’s most magical venue.”
Access and Inclusion Advocate, Rose Jukes also trialled the system and adds: “I have tested the new equipment with my own hearing aid and from a deaf perspective, I was impressed with how the orchestra music is enhanced alongside the actors’ microphones. This improves the immersive/sensory experience, and allows me to better understand shows without subtitles, providing more flexibility in booking options.
“This Audio Description system upgrade is a fantastic example of how Disability Access and Inclusion benefits everyone, not just disabled people. The equipment is compatible with plug in headphones (available at the Hippodrome), providing everyone with the opportunity to adjust the volume of the orchestra and actors’ microphones according to personal preference.”
Our new Audio Description equipment is now available for all upcoming performances. To book ahead of your visit, please call our friendly Access Advisors on 0121 689 1060 who will be happy to help.
