As part of Birmingham Black History Month 2019, Wassifa and Birmingham Hippodrome present The Knights of the Turntables.
From the limited technology and hand-built sound boxes of the 1970s to entertaining massive crowds today, Wassifa, Brown CIC has been instrumental in the development and rise of reggae music in the city of Birmingham and throughout the UK.
Brought to the UK by migration from Jamaica, reggae music and the sound system transcended racial and cultural barriers and have had a widespread influence on British culture at large and especially the emergence of African Caribbean youth culture in the UK.
Join us and The Knights of the Turntables from 5-7pm for a panel talk about the importance of reggae and sound systems in British cultural history. The panel will be hosted by Mykal Brown MBE (Mykal Wassifa) & Rebbecca Hemmings. Panel guests include:
Lloyd Blake – Original premiere promoter of The Sound System and Concerts in Birmingham
Bernie Dixon – Promoter, Music Producer and Artist Management
Amalak Tafari – Steel Pulse
Dr Martin Glynn – Birmingham City University
Valerie Robinson – Promoter & Manager, V-Rocket Sound System
Stay from 7-10pm for an evening of digital projection and heavy riddims…
