Young Community x B-SIDE Takeover: Exploring the elements of Hip-Hop

The B-SIDE edition of our popular Young Community Drop In is a chilled space for young people to come along and experience incredible workshops by inspirational artists. This year we'll be exploring hip hop through theatre, dance and music. We're also offering young people at the drop in free tickets to see TONES, a theatre show by Gerel Falconer, set to hip hop, grime and drill music.

B-Side Hip Hop Festival & Afroflux presents: Hand up for Handsworth exhibition by Rob Bailey

A Photographic exhibition capturing the first Hip-Hop Sound System in Birmingham at a time the early Hip-Hop Scene began to emerge. Taken on 35mm film in 1989 the exhibition follows The Handsworth Groove Syndicate at events like Handsworth Carnival and Jam sessions around Birmingham. Guided tours and conversation with photographer Rob Bailey will take place on Sat 8 June

Premiere of 40 Times Out of 50: A Birmingham Hip-Hop Story + Q&A with Juice Aleem

The premiere of a new short film directed by Juice Aleem, exploring 40 years of Hip-Hop culture in Birmingham. With exclusive interviews and archive footage the film tells the story of how Hip-Hop started in the second city.
Following the film there will be a Q&A session with Juice Aleem along with some of the key Birmingham Hip-Hop greats.

Official Street Sounds Radio Block Party with High Vis

Thorp Street Block party hosted by pioneering record label STREET SOUNDS. DJ’s Rob Hardman & Docta D will be spinning Hip-Hop and Electro from the 80’s to present day. High Vis Festival have gathered some of the best Graff artists around for a graffiti jam with painting taking inspiration from the Iconic Subway Art book which is celebrating 40 years since its release.

Afroflux: Fluxcon - 40 Years of Hip-Hop in Birmingham

Fluxcon is a Mini-convention from Afroflux, curated by Birmingham multi-disciplinary artist Juice Aleem. Mixing visual arts, cosplay, creativity, workshops, film screening, talks, movement, science and a marketplace, celebrating the radical imagination of Black and Brown communities locally and worldwide.

Kings Heath Clangers are hosting a community basketball hangout. Featuring competitions The Second City Shootout and a Free Throw Competition. Qualifiers take over Hippodrome Square with Break Mission All Styles, Hip Hop & Krump Qualifiers alongside Queer-Side Waacking Qualifiers.
Queer-Side continues it’s mission of making space for the Queer community through a new, dedicated, competition for Waackers. Queer-Side opens dialogue for inclusivity within Hip-Hop communities.
