"Powerful and poignant" - First Reactions to the European premiere of Aakash Odedra's #JeSuis
Last night saw our Patrick Studio play host to the European premiere of Aakash Odedra’s urgent and compelling new dance work #JeSuis.
Performed by a company of seven Turkish dancers and devised over a period of two years, #JeSuis shines a spotlight on the company’s own collective response to the misinterpretations of their country by the media, exploring issues of displacement, migration, individual self-expression and political oppression through an exhilarating marriage of movement and music.
It’s safe to say that audience reaction to the show has been nothing short of staggering with responses ranging from ‘stunning and unforgettable…one of the best things I’ve seen'(Asian Culture Vulture) to ‘gripping, inventive and pertinent’ (William Stafford).
You can read a selection of highlights from the night below. Plus, to celebrate the show’s European premiere, we were thrilled to welcome third year BCU Visual Communications student Alicia Knight, who was invited behind-the-scenes of the company dress rehearsal to capture some of the show’s most shocking, explosive and intimate moments. Exceptional performance of the beautifully crafted #JeSuis last night by the cast of @AakashOdedra @brumhippodrome followed by an insightful post show Q&A with @Fiona_Allan. Topical, political, disturbing, relevant – must see!

Culture writer Tatiana saw JeSuis at @brumhippodrome, and she says it’s ‘an incredible amalgamation of theatre and dance… it explains conflict through emotion without any words, and it’s clear how invested the dancers are in the company and the piece.’ Full review soon!
