This week is National Apprenticeship Week, in 2021 we took on a group of Apprentices across a range of departments at Birmingham Hippodrome. This week we are highlighting some of the different roles across the theatre. Today our Learning & Participation Assistant Jhanee is in the spotlight!

What is your title and which department do you work with?

Learning & Participation Assistant. The Learning & Participation department.

What do you do?

I assist our Learning & Participation Artists with delivery in school. I assist with the Young Advocates programme, admin tasks and I am the choreographer for our Musical Theatre Youth Programme.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I wanted to upskill and gain official training in working with young people, I also wanted to learn more about the arts and working in an organisation.

Why did you want to work for Birmingham Hippodrome?

I’ve always looked up to Birmingham Hippodrome as a leader in creativity within the West Midlands. I applied to do my year 11 work experience here and I used to come to Ballet and Contemporary dance classes at DanceXchange.

What has been your favourite moment so far?

Working with the young people and my colleagues to produce our Musical Theatre Young Company Cinders Christmas panto.

What is something you have learnt whilst on the job?

I have learnt how to think on my feet and how draw on knowledge and skills I already have to be flexible. I have also learnt new resources and techniques to use when working with young people.
