Birmingham Hippodrome legend, Big Joe, is often the very first face you’ll see when visiting us as he works on security near our main doors. His vibrant personality has turned him into something of a Hippodrome celebrity, with plenty of Trip Advisor comments, Facebook posts and even a mention in the press!
How long have you worked at Birmingham Hippodrome?
I’ve been here for nearly 4 years and have loved every minute!
How would you describe your job?
A large part of my job is greeting our visitors and making sure everyone feels safe and welcome. I work closely with the Duty Manager to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible. On occasions, if there’s an issue I’ll be there to find a resolution. But, to be honest I spend a lot of my time having a laugh with our visitors as they come in and a quick chat about the show on their way out.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
I think it’s the gratitude from people I interact with on a day-to-day basis. Just from having a friendly chat with parents at our pantomime or helping elderly couples get a taxi after a night at the ballet, people are exceptionally grateful. This festive season I’ve had Christmas cards, mince pies and even a bottle or two of wine from our visitors.
What’s your best memory?
What many people don’t know about me is that I’m an avid baker. This is usually a great surprise to people, but no-one was more surprised than Brian Conley! While he was performing at our theatre in pantomime I introduced him to ‘chocolate concrete’, a Birmingham favourite, and he loved it. The look on his face definitely was a picture.
What show/event are you most looking forward to in the coming season?
Well it is Pantomime season! I recently bumped into Beverley Knight and Suzanne Shaw who are both staring in Cinderella. They both kindly posed for a picture with me and seem like lovely women. I can’t wait to see them on the stage.
