In the latest of our regular staff blogs, we chat to Communications Intern Amy Stutz about her varied and exciting role as a member of the Hippodrome’s busy Communications Team.

From capturing the very best content on social media to assisting with press launches, VIP nights and more, Amy’s working life is never short of glamour…or graft for that matter!

How long have you worked at the Hippodrome?

Since February this year, so only a couple of months!

What made you want to work here?

I fell in love with theatre at the Birmingham Hippodrome back when my mum used to take me as a little girl to see Birmingham Royal Ballet and the spectacular musicals. Then whilst studying musical theatre at college I became a First Night Blogger for the Hippodrome and came to all their press nights to review the shows on my blog. This created my love for writing about theatre and I then grew my blog to become a freelance theatre blogger, reviewing all over the country. I knew the lovely communications team very well from coming to press nights and the Birmingham Hippodrome is a theatre very close to my heart, so when I spotted the internship on Twitter I just had to go for it!

How would you describe your job?

My job interning in the communications team is quite varied but mainly consists of communicating to Birmingham and beyond the amazing things we have going on at the Birmingham Hippodrome. I predominantly work in digital, so a lot of my work goes into all the social media accounts, creating blog and video content, assisting with campaigns, managing our press lists and helping to organise the press nights.

How would you describe a typical working day?

No day is the same, but I usually start with using our social media scheduling program to make sure all upcoming events are covered on social media, and we have enough content going out each day. I then put my creative head on and work alongside my team to create and plan campaigns in order to get people excited about the shows and festivals we have coming up. In-between that I am constantly researching specialist influencers such as bloggers, you-tubers and media to add to our database.

What’s the favourite part of your job?

I love every aspect of my job because I am such a huge theatre geek. However, my favourite part would be any aspect of my job that involves working closely with the productions themselves, such as interviewing the actors for our blog or taking bloggers on a backstage tour.

What’s your favourite production in general?

This is a question I am ALWAYS asked but can never answer. As a huge lover of musicals I would have to say In The Heights as it is the soundtrack that is constantly playing in my car and I caught it four times during its run in London last year.

What are you most proud of achieving here?

I haven’t been here long and I am still very much getting to grips with everything, but I am probably most proud of all organising and scheduling all the social media content for our Matilda announcement, as we got record-breaking engagement (likes, shares etc) over Facebook and Twitter – not to mention how fantastic it was to see such an overwhelming response. It is a spectacular show and I can’t wait for it to arrive at the Birmingham Hippodrome.

Which show/event are you most looking forward to in the coming season?

I am most excited for The Addams Family as it is the UK premiere and a musical that I haven’t seen before! Also, I am a big fan of Carrie Fletcher and adore her musical theatre videos on YouTube so I am looking forward to seeing her play Wednesday Addams.
