What's On > Birmingham Royal Ballet - Shadows of War

Play Video
Wed 8 - Sat 11 Oct 2014 (ARCHIVED LISTING)

Birmingham Royal Ballet presents three one-act ballets, each touched in their own way by the shadow of war.

The triple bill opens with Kenneth MacMillan’s La Fin du jour, capturing the glamorous lifestyle of the 1930s wealthy set, using Maurice Ravel’s score to create an elegy to a lifestyle lost to World War II.
Miracle in the Gorbals has been specially re-created for the Company by Dame Gillian Lynne, from Robert Helpmann’s original work set in 1940s Glasgow and danced to music by Sir Arthur Bliss.
The programme closes with David Bintley’s Flowers of the Forest; with music by Malcolm Arnold and
Benjamin Britten, it contrasts picture-postcard Scotland with that country's own bloody history.
