What's On > Mark Morris Dance Group

Thu 22 - Sat 24 Apr 2010 (ARCHIVED LISTING)

Described by The Washington Post as America’s “Mozart of modern dance”, Mark Morris has changed forever the way audiences see dance. The world-renowned choreographer returns to Birmingham Hippodrome to present his brilliant and majestic L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato.

When it premiered in 1988, it was instantly heralded as a landmark work. The musical landscape is Handel’s pastoral ode, set to the poetry of John Milton, whilst the sets are
inspired by William Blake’s later watercolours illustrating Milton’s text. Boasting twenty-four dancers, ENO’s Orchestra under conductor Jane Glover, and an outstanding quartet
of soloists including Mark Padmore and Elizabeth Watts, don’t miss “one of the very greatest dances of the late 20th century” BOSTON HERALD.

“Once in a very rare while something comes along that simply has to be seen...blissful dance” THE TIMES

Part 1: Mark Morris Dance Group: A Dance Center in Brooklyn
One of the world’s most acclaimed choreographers and his company are based right here in Bklyn, but Mark Morris Dance Group is as involved with community as it is with dance.  Its outreach is broad, teaching dance to kids in its studios and in public schools; seniors from public housing; and people with Parkinson’s Disease, to name just a few.

Part 2: Mark Morris Dance Group: The Art of Mark Morris
Dancers, composers, costume designers, set designers, even critics – they all have something to say about what makes the full-length works of choreographer Mark Morris (The Hard Nut and L’Allegro, for example) so fascinating and challenging to collaborate on, perform in, or simply experience.

This is the best, in the content of the ballet all (well almost) humanity is found here, hugely emotive , laughter, tears, and much else ; it reaches deeply into our cultural instincts and historic references . And the performance is one of those rare rare moments where concept, choreography, skill of dancer, exultation of voice, tonal surge of chorus, utter excellence of orchestra , and success of conductor all converge to reduce us the audience to a poor artless answer in our cacaphony of baying and cheering appreciation and admiration and gratitude for having been present. Thank you Mark Morris .
