PRESS RELEASE

·        CIRCOLOMBIA presents URBAN
·        Circus meets street dance meets Hip Hop
·        Birmingham Premiere, 16-18 May 2012
·        Part of International Dance Festival Birmingham 2012

Birmingham Hippodrome is delighted to announce the forthcoming visit of the sensational CIRCOLOMBIA who perform their gritty acrobatic, Hip Hop dance piece URBAN on three nights only, Wednesday 16, Thursday 17 and Friday 18 May.

CIRCOLOMBIA’s members are all in their teens or early 20s, and some are graduates of the remarkable Circo Para Todos, Columbia’s national circus school, which takes young people off the streets and teaches them circus skills.   Circo Para Todos is the only school in the world set up to train disadvantaged young people in a range of abilities including acrobatics, balancing, juggling, stilt walking and unicycling providing them with a profession, support structure and an alternative to joining street gangs.

URBAN fuses all of the company’s experiences and skills to bring audiences a unique blend of breathtaking acrobatics, fire juggling, stilt walking, street dance and Hip Hop.   Based on the lives of the young cast, URBAN is a true narrative of the streets of Cali, their own society, where dance and music provide a safety valve for everyday life.

URBAN features a pounding live reggaeton soundtrack featuring strings, heavy basslines and haunting melodies which carries the audience through a tapestry of interwoven stories, to far off tribal beats, and the sounds and atmospheres of the Carnival.

This is CIRCOLOMBIA’S first visit to Birmingham following previous sell-out tours of the UK and Europe and is part of the acclaimed International Dance Festival Birmingham 2012.

CIRCOLOMBIA’S URBAN runs at Birmingham Hippodrome from Wednesday 16 – Friday 18 May 2012 tickets are priced £10-£20.  Performance times eves 8pm.   Contact Ticket Sales on 0844 338 5000 or book online at www.birminghamhippodrome.com (calls vary from 5p per minute, 5% transaction charge).
