Media Centre > What's On > Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty

Tue 5 - Sat 9 Feb 2013 (ARCHIVED LISTING)

New Adventures’ 25th birthday culminates with the world premiere of Matthew Bourne’s latest re-imagining of a ballet classic.

Sleeping Beauty sees Bourne return to the music of Tchaikovsky to complete the trio of ballet masterworks that started with Nutcracker! and the international smash hit, Swan Lake.

Our story begins in 1890 at the christening of Princess Aurora, a time when fairies and vampires fed the gothic imagination, before moving forward in time to the modern day.

Featuring designs by Olivier Award winners Lez Brotherston (Set and Costumes), Paule Constable (Lighting) with Sound Design by Paul Groothuis, which will take the audience into the heart of Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score in specially recorded surround sound.

Matthew Bourne’s haunting new production is a Gothic Romance for all ages; a supernatural love story that even the passage of time cannot hinder.

Saw Sleeping Beauty last night at the Hipperdrome. Dancing excellent but performance ruined by very loud recorded score that accompanied the performance. The sound blasted out of the speakers. It wasn't surround sound but straight through you sound. Horrible!

I saw this piece on the 7th of February and it was honestly one of the best experiences of my entire life, i thoroughly enjoyed the show and it will stay with me forever, i would absolutely love to perform on a stage and it makes me jealous that the dancers were on the stage i would pay good money to meet the dancers it was the most amazing and beautiful thing i have ever witnessed, AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was an absolute triumph and I loved every minute from the light and comedy to the dark and gothic. Brilliant interpretation, wonderful costumes and scenery with what must have been some very fast changes. Aurora was amazing, so supple and relaxed and a wonderful dancer as was the dark prince. I can't praise this production enough and sincerely hope it will come to Birmingham again before too long.

I saw Matthew Bourne's 'Sleeping Beauty' at the Theatre Royal in Norwich last night and it was staggering! The over all design, quality of performance and emotion of the piece was breathtaking and I've just bought tickets for February at the Hippodrome for myself, husband and Mom. Get in while you can!
