Media Centre > What's On > Welsh National Opera - Manon Lescaut

Wed 5 Mar, Fri 7 Mar (ARCHIVED LISTING)
Manon Lescaut is the classic Fallen Woman.

Manon has been seduced. As an impressionable young woman she wanted it all. She wanted to taste the tempting fruit of adult life. Now just months later she has discovered that the fruit is rotten at the core. Does Manon have any chance of salvation?

Puccini charts her rapid descent from innocent to criminal with feverish intensity. If you enjoy La bohème, Madam Butterfly and Tosca you will want to explore Puccini’s breakthrough hit and first great opera.

By setting this production in the contemporary world we all recognise, Mariusz Trelinski’s production brings this breathless tale of obsession and self-destruction urgently to life.

Please note:
This production contains moments of adult content.
There are flashing images on digital screens throughout this performance. There are no strobe effects.

Fri 7 March

great night Birmingham Hippodrome, enjoyed the Welsh National Opera production of Manon Lescaut. Shame the theater wasnt as full as it could have been for this Audio described event, with Jonathon & Margaret (sight lines) Chiara Taigi (Manon Lescaut) gave a fabulously rich and yet delicate performance, that seemed to arrive effortlessly. David Kempster (Lescaut) whose rich voice seems to go from strength to strength. also worthy of mention were Gwyn Hughes Jones, and Stephen Richardson the whole company gave worthy performance of Puccini s little performed work, this was not a lavish set with rich costumes to guild the performance, it was set we are to believe in a late 1950's eastern European country, at the Main train station, the set is dark and broody, and by cleaver lighting and items flown in, one can be at the station, in an apartment, in a prison etc. Well done to all great entertainment, thank you
