Education > Creative Learning with Birmingham Hippodrome

The Mailing List

By creating new experiences and crossing cultural boundaries within our  local communities, Birmingham Hippodrome’s education team continues to offer highly innovative projects to a wide range of participants.

We offer backstage tours and a wide range of workshops for both primary and secondary schools, as well as local colleges and community groups.

To complement our main house programme, we deliver a range of related workshops, open rehearsals pre- and post-show talks enabling young people access to unique creative opportunities delivered by professional artists and stars of our shows.

We can support schools to create an enhanced understanding of curricula subjects by creating innovative non-show related workshops and projects based on the workings of an active and busy theatre. These include science, environmental studies, and history discovery days in addition to numeracy, literacy and music. We also offer technical theatre days, careers days and can help design workshops for BTEC Performing Arts modules.

We are always happy to work with teachers to develop bespoke workshops, designed individually for your school.

Birmingham Hippodrome is offering workshop places for young people aged from 7-16 years old, interested in the performing arts. Working alongside a creative team of professional dancers, directors, actors and musicians in addition to Birmingham Hippodrome’s professional technical team, young people can take part in our Holiday workshops.

May Half Term: Tue 27 - Fri 30 May, 10am - 3pm daily (£100)
Summer Holiday: Mon 4 – Fri 8 Aug, 10am - 3pm daily (£125)

Performance Workshops

Open to ages 7-11  & 12-16

Participants will learn and perform extracts from some of our favourite musicals, staged (or about to be staged!) at Birmingham Hippodrome. Using dance, drama and song to recreate iconic moments in musical theatre, the young people will perform their final versions to families and friends on the final Friday of each workshop week in our Patrick Centre Studio, supported by the Technical Summer School participants.

Technical Workshops
Open to ages 12-16

Young people will work alongside members of Birmingham Hippodrome’s technical team of lighting, sound and stage management. This workshop will let participants into the magic of theatre and teach them how to create many different stage effects which enhance a show’s performance. Working simultaneously with the performance workshop participants, the young people will learn how to: design and rig lighting; create special smoke effects; reproduce concert quality sound and integrate film into a live performance.

All places must be booked through Ticket Sales on 0844 338 5000*

Teachers! Feel the need for inspiration? ...a little isolated? ...at the end of your creative tether?
We offer regular networking events for teachers to meet local colleagues, catch up on what is happening in other schools and pool ideas in an informal and open forum, with a creative input from Birmingham Hippodrome’s Education Department and a variety of arts practitioners.

The sessions run late afternoon on weekdays and are open to teachers from primary, secondary and special schools. You will also be given the opportunity to stay and watch that evening’s production at a discounted price whenever possible.

Next meeting: Wednesday 9 April  4.30-6pm

Please call Rachel Sharpe on 0121 689 3192 or Liz Leck on 0121 689 3064 or email education@birminghamhippodrome.com to book your place.
