Did you know that Henry and James Draysey were inspired by the seaside resort of Blackpool and particularly the iconic Blackpool tower when they built the Hippodrome in 1899 and named it the Tower of varieties and Circus? They even built a tower on top of the theatre in homage to Blackpool.

As Summer in Southside brings the seaside right to the Hippodrome’s door we explore the story of Birmingham Hippodrome in our open day, from the early variety days, inspired by Blackpool, to the big stars and massive productions that have performed on our stage over the last century.
